Deformable image registration in radiation therapy

چکیده
The number of imaging data sets has significantly increased during radiation treatment after introducing a diverse range of advanced techniques into the field of radiation oncology. As a consequence, there have been many studies proposing meaningful applications of imaging data set use. These applications commonly require a method to align the data sets at a reference. Deformable image registration (DIR) is a process which satisfies this requirement by locally registering image data sets into a reference image set. DIR identifies the spatial correspondence in order to minimize the differences between two or among multiple sets of images. This article describes clinical applications, validation, and algorithms of DIR techniques. Applications of DIR in radiation treatment include dose accumulation, mathematical modeling, automatic segmentation, and functional imaging. Validation methods discussed are based on anatomical landmarks, physical phantoms, digital phantoms, and per application purpose. DIR algorithms are also briefly reviewed with respect to two algorithmic components: similarity index and deformation models.

Evaluation of deformable image registration in HDR gynecological brachytherapy
Introduction: In brachytherapy, as in external radiotherapy, image-guidance plays an important role. For GYN treatments it is standard to acquire at least CT images and preferably MR images prior to each treatment and to calculate the dose of the day on each set of images. Then, the dose to the target and to the organs at risk (OAR) is calculated with worst case scenario from I...

Background: Medical image interpolation is recently introduced as a helpful tool to obtain further information via initial available images taken by tomography systems. To do this, deformable image registration algorithms are mainly utilized to perform image interpolation using tomography images.Materials and Methods: In this work, 4DCT thoracic images of five real patients provided by DI...
متن کاملA Software Toolkit for Multi-Image Registration and Segmentation in IGRT and ART
Introduction An essential step in radiation therapy is accurate three-dimensional segmentation of the target and organs at risk. Traditionally, this has been done by manual contouring on a slice-by-slice basis, but modern adaptive radiation therapy (ART) protocols can require segmentation of multiple daily images for each patient [1], increasing the pressure to develop automated methods for seg...
متن کاملLarge deformation three-dimensional image registration in image-guided radiation therapy.
In this paper, we present and validate a framework, based on deformable image registration, for automatic processing of serial three-dimensional CT images used in image-guided radiation therapy. A major assumption in deformable image registration has been that, if two images are being registered, every point of one image corresponds appropriately to some point in the other. For intra-treatment ...
متن کاملDeformable registration for image-guided radiation therapy.
Ths paper examines several applications of deformable registration algorithms in the field of image-guided radiotherapy. The first part focuses on the description of input and output of deformable registration algorithms, with a brief review of conventional and most current methods. The typical applications of deformable registration are then reviewed on the basis of four practical examples. Th...
متن کاملDeformable registration using edge‐preserving scale space for adaptive image‐guided radiation therapy
Incorporating of daily cone-beam computer tomography (CBCT) image into online radiation therapy process can achieve adaptive image-guided radiation therapy (AIGRT). Registration of planning CT (PCT) and daily CBCT are the key issues in this process. In our work, a new multiscale deformable registration method is proposed by combining edge-preserving scale space with the multilevel free-form def...
